Dee Milliner tweaked by ex-Jets coach Mike Westhoff

Dee Milliner's proclamation that he is the NFL's best cornerback was so outlandish that Richard Sherman didn't even bother to weigh in via social media.

The second-year cornerback's braggadocio did manage to rub former New York Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff the wrong way, however.

"I was not very impressed with his rookie year," Westhoff said this week, via NJ.com. "He made the mistake -- and sometimes I think it's the way a guy phrases an answer to a question -- about being the best cornerback in the league, and he said that he was.

"Man, I'm not sure he's the best cornerback up here in Cortland. And I might include the university."

Westhoff remains in good standing with the Jets, spending time on the sidelines this week.

He's not alone in his sentiment that Milliner is better seen and not heard.

One high-ranking front office man told Dan Pompei of Sports On Earth, "He had an average year. What he said was a joke."

"Average" is putting it kindly. Milliner was benched three times before turning his season around with Defensive Rookie of the Month honors for December.

It's worth noting that coach Rex Ryanisn't asking his players to tone it down.

Confidence is a fragile thing in a young cornerback, and Milliner appeared to finally find his late last season. If he gets his way, the No. 9 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft will be shadowing opposing No. 1 receivers this season.
