David Wilson won't need season-ending surgery

New York Giants running back David Wilson's neck injury will not end his 2013 season.

A person who has spoken with Wilson told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport that specialist Dr. Robert Watkins did not recommend surgery after a consultation Monday.

Although Wilson was optimistic about playing in Week 7, Rapoport reports the tailback still is expected to miss three to four weeks with the injury.

Wilson insisted in a Sunday tweet that he feels no worse than he did before the injury.

The news is positive not just for Wilson's season, but also for the rest of his career. Doctors originally feared he might be suffering from spinal stenosis -- a narrowing of the spinal column.

If Wilson sticks to the three-to-four-week timeframe, he will join fellow running back Andre Brown (fractured leg) in returning after the Week 9 bye.

In the meantime, a suddenly rejuvenated Brandon Jacobs will carry the load in the Giants' backfield.
