David Garrard: Dolphins owner adds 'more fuel for me'

Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross raised eyebrows on Monday when he speculated quarterback Matt Moore would get the nod over rookie Ryan Tannehill as the team's Week 1 starter.

Ross' candor was a surprise to many, likely most of all David Garrard, who believed he had a shot at the No. 1 spot when he signed with Miami in March.

Darlington: Dolphins unified at QB

Owners tend to overstep their bounds at times, but Jeff Darlington applauds Stephen Ross' remarks on Miami's QB race. **More ...**

Garrard's ego might have been bruised by Ross' comments, but his goals haven't changed.

"That's just more fuel for me. It's somebody else I have to try and prove wrong," Garrard said Wednesday, according to ESPN.com. "The owner is the owner. He can make all of the comments that he wants. I am never going to dispute him, but I'll just let my play on the field go out and show for it."

As Gregg Rosenthal pointed out, Ross' comments could be read as a death knell for Garrard, who is attempting an NFL comeback after sitting out last season following back surgery. Whether Tannehill starts or not, the Dolphins will likely give their top draft pick his fair share of snaps during training camp and the preseason.

Garrard is counting on his play on the field to do the talking, but will he be on the field enough to get his message across?
