Chaz Schilens: N.Y. Jets were looking for scapegoats

Chaz Schilens is attempting to keep his football career alive with the Detroit Lions, who signed the wide receiver the day before training camp began.

Schilens' previous stop was in New York, where he made six starts in his lone season with the Jets. The Lions will face Schilens' former team in Friday's preseason opener.

Schilens didn't sound nostalgic when asked why it didn't work out with the Jets.

"For me there?" Schilens said, according to the Detroit Free Press. "Really, when it came down to it, I kind of felt like they were looking for scapegoats and besides everyone except for, you know, maybe the quarterback position, and it was what it was. When free agency didn't start off right away, I just kind of understood what it was and part of the business."

Schilens is giving himself too much credit if he thinks the Jets tried to use him as a scapegoat for their 6-10 tumble last season. Either way, don't expect to see Schilens sharing a prayer circle with Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez after Friday's game.
