Charles Johnson to undergo MRI on injured right knee

The Carolina Panthers emerged victorious over the New England Patriots without defensive end Charles Johnson for most of the second half.

Johnson, leading the team in sacks with 8.5, was carted to the locker room with a right knee injury early in the third quarter of Monday night's game. NFL Media's Albert Breer reported Johnson suffered a minor MCL sprain.

Johnson went down in agony after taking a leg whip from Patriots right tackle Marcus Cannon on what appeared to be a dirty play. He was previously listed as questionable, but returned to action in the fourth quarter.

Johnson has been enjoying a Pro Bowl-caliber season for a defense that might be the best in the league.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, for one, was not happy to see Cannon leg whip Johnson.

According to Breer, Johnson said that Cannon found him after the game and apologized.

UPDATE: Johson tweeted that he will undergo an MRI on Tuesday.
