Cedric Benson reportedly targeted by Oakland Raiders

Cedric Benson has tales to tell about the paper-thin market for aging running backs, but the Oakland Raiders might ride to his rescue.

Benson, 29, remains on the team's radar, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Friday. Schefter suggested Oakland could float an offer to Benson just before training camp, or soon after it opens. It bolsters what we heard earlier this month.

The Cincinnati Bengals washed their hands of Benson this winter, bringing in BenJarvus Green-Ellis to fill out the backfield. The Raiders -- who lost Michael Bush to the Chicago Bears -- appear intrigued at the notion of pairing Benson with Darren McFadden. It would mean less carries for Mike Goodson and Taiwan Jones, but McFadden's injury history, which sidelined Oakland's offense last season, makes a veteran back an attractive move.

There was a time when a runner with three straight 1,000-yard seasons wouldn't be searching for work in June. Benson hit the open market at an ugly hour, but it sounds as though Oakland may be willing to give him a chance.
