Raiders sign first-round defensive end Clelin Ferrell

The Oakland Raiders locked down the first of three first-round draft picks.

The team announced No. 4 overall selection Clelin Ferrell inked his four-year rookie contract Tuesday. As with all first-round picks, the deal comes with a team option for a fifth season.

Viewed as a surprise pick at the top of the draft, the Raiders have glowed about the defensive end's pro-readiness and acumen to contribute from Day 1 as a player and leader. Oakland defensive coordinator Paul Guenther compared Ferrell to Bengals underrated pass rusher Carlos Dunlap recently. Ferrell might not own the traits that blow scouts away, but his consistent production and skill in every facet made the Raiders comfortable taking him with a top-five pick.

The Clemson product won the 2018 Ted Hendrick's Award, given to the nation's top defensive end. In his senior season, Ferrell generated 55 tackles -- including 20 for loss -- 11.5 sacks, four passes defended, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, including one for a TD, earning a consensus first-team All-American selection, first-team All-ACC and the ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

The Raiders also announced they've signed safety Johnathan Abram to his rookie deal. Abram, the No. 27 overall pick, was named to the First-Team All-SEC for Mississippi State in 2018.

The Raiders will now turn their attention to their final first round pick, running back Josh Jacobs, who has yet to sign his rookie contract. The club also announced the signing of second-rounder Trayvon Mullen to his rookie deal Tuesday.
