Aaron Rodgers isn't just happy about ending his own personal four-year postseason drought. He's also glad that the Steelers getting into the playoffs has quieted the talk of Mike Tomlin's future with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
"At 6-6, there were a lot of people thinking we were going to be stumbling to the finish, and then who knows what was going to happen," Rodgers said, via 93.7 The Fan, hinting at rumors and fan chatter that Tomlin's job could be in jeopardy. "A lot of you probably in this group, either publicly or privately, were talking about Mike T getting axed. So it feels good to shut all those comments down."
Rodgers and the Steelers clinched the AFC North title and the playoff berth that goes with it on Sunday night with a nail-biting win over the Baltimore Ravens.
"They've gotta try to find something to get after him. Mike T's probably like me," Rodgers said, via ESPN: "Doesn't give a whole lot of s--- about any of those comments. But it is nice because we all love him and want to play for him and want to win for him."
As far as Rodgers is concerned, it doesn't matter what has happened to lead up to Monday’s Wild Card matchup against the Houston Texans. The Steelers' opportunity still lies ahead of them.
"Clean the slate now, anyone can make a run," Rodgers said. "We've won four out of five. I like our chances."
Rodgers has gotten plenty out of his Pittsburgh experience so far, bouncing back from two tough years with the Jets to lead the Steelers to their first division title since 2020. He reflected on his time in New York, saying that with the Steelers, there "aren't any leaks in the boat," which Rodgers said was the "antithesis of where I was."
Questions about Tomlin and Rodgers and their fates for next season could reemerge if the Steelers lose in the playoffs. But even with the ups and downs the Steelers have faced, the 42-year-old QB said this season to this point has been refreshing.
"To go through a season like this and be able to focus on football and not have a lot of other little bulls--- out there has been really nice," he said.
