Rex Ryan had one of his signature moments during his postgame interview after the San Francisco 49ers destroyed his New York Jets 34-0 on Sunday.
"I was going to say we got our butt kicked, but really, we got our ass kicked," the Jets' coach said. "There's no two ways, ins or outs about it.
"Here's the recipe for getting your ass kicked, all right: 2 for 13 on third down. That's 15 percent. Four turnovers. A blocked punt when they rush one guy. And giving up 245 yards rushing. How's that for a recipe?"
Don't forget shoddy quarterback play.
Nothing went well for the Jets. Starter Mark Sanchez (13-of-29 passing) threw for 103 yards and an interception, had a 39.9 passer rating and was sacked three times in the first half. He also lost one of the Jets' three fumbles. But the loss wasn't just on the offense.
Cornerback Kyle Wilson let receivers get behind him three times, but he was fortunate with incomplete passes. The Jets' vaunted defense couldn't defend the run, and they let the 49ers methodically put points on the board. The score would have been worse if David Akers hadn't missed two field-goal attempts.
Ryan deserved to be ticked off.
"Obviously unacceptable," Ryan said. "We got to look at it. It starts with the coaches. (The players) are not going to be in on Monday or Tuesday. They've got to dig deep and look down at themselves, and we have to look as coaches at what we're doing.
"I've never given up so many rushing yards in my life. So what can we do to help? We can't just say it's poor tackling or this or that. There must be something to it. So we're going to find out. But clearly we're not going to beat anybody when you play like that.
"We couldn't convert a third down. We couldn't protect, and we struggled running the football. Other than that ... I don't know."
The game was so lopsided that Fox switched away with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter to show the competitive Carolina Panthers-Atlanta Falcons game. MetLife Stadium echoed with boos in the second half, and there was only a ring of red 49ers fans left for the final minutes.
The Jets' wins have come against the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins -- not exactly world-beaters. Something has to change if the Jets want to consider themselves legit playoff contenders.
