Saints owner Benson expected to make full recovery from cancer surgery

New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson is expected to make a full recovery following cancer surgery last week.

Team spokesman Greg Bensel confirmed Wednesday that the 81-year-old Benson underwent surgery on Dec. 10 for a cancerous mass on his left kidney.

Benson was released Sunday and is at home, Bensel said in a statement released by the team. Benson is under the primary care of his personal physician and Saints team doctor, John R. Amoss, who said he expects a full recovery.

"It was diagnosed as early-stage renal cell cancer, and the prognosis for this type of cancer removed at this stage is excellent," said Amoss. "We anticipate a full and complete recovery, and he will not need any radiation or chemotherapy."

Benson will miss the team trip to Detroit for a game against the Lions but is expected to be back in his office next week.
