Browns to name Jauron for defensive coordinator role

Dick Jauron is close to finalizing a contract to become the defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met Tuesday and Wednesday with Jauron about running the team's defense.

East-West Shrine Game on NFL Network:
On Saturday, Jan. 22, NFL stars of tomorrow compete in the 2011 East-West Shrine Game in Orlando, Fla. Coverage begins on NFL Network at 3:30 p.m. ET.

The 60-year-old Jauron spent the past two seasons coaching Philadelphia's secondary. He previously coached in Buffalo and Chicago, posting a 60-82 record.

Jauron was a candidate for Philadelphia's defensive coordinator position after the team fired former coordinator Sean McDermott, and the Eagles hoped to retain Jauron, according to the source.

Jauron was a defensive coordinator with Jacksonville from 1995-98 before being named head coach of the Bears from 1999-2003. He became defensive coordinator of the Lions in 2004 and was named interim head coach for the last five games of the 2005 season.

Shurmur, hired last week as Cleveland's fifth coach since 1999, is also looking for an offensive coordinator after Brian Daboll was fired and signed with Miami. Rob Ryan, Cleveland's defensive coordinator the past two years under Eric Mangini, is now with the Dallas Cowboys.

Shurmur also met with Dave Wannstedt on Thursday, who was forced to resign at Pitt after going 7-5 this past season, his sixth at the school. Wannstedt has drawn interest from the Buffalo Bills.

The Browns also are in the market for an offensive coordinator. Shurmur plans to call his own plays next season, which could be limiting his choices.
