Vikings release Ciurcui, an injury-plagued linebacker, special-teamer

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings released linebacker Vinny Ciurciu, primarily a special-teams player, on Tuesday.

Ciurcui signed a three-year contract worth up to $3 million with $500,000 guaranteed in 2006, but injuries were a problem, and he didn't make a big impact on the Vikings' coverage units.

Undrafted out of Boston College, Ciurcui has played six seasons in the NFL, also spending time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers. He was active for 14 of 16 regular-season games in 2008 for Minnesota, recording eight tackles on special teams and three on defense.
