USC paid Lane Kiffin $2.7 million a year after his firing

Lane Kiffin is one of the most highly paid offensive coordinators in college football, but the $680,000 he earned in his first year at Alabama in 2014 is a mere fraction of the compensation he received that same year from the school that fired him in 2013.

USC paid Kiffin $2.7 million the year after he was terminated as head coach at midseason by athletic director Pat Haden, according to The Los Angeles Times. That was a little less than the $2.9 million Haden was paid that year.

Kiffin was paid $680,000 over his first two years at Alabama, and earned every penny in working with first-year quarterbacks Blake Sims and Jake Coker on the way to notching two SEC titles, two College Football Playoff berths, and the CFP championship last season. Kiffin earned $3.4 million per year as USC's head coach. Per the terms of his USC contract, USC had to pay the difference between that total and the compensation in his next contract, according to the Alabama Media Group.

It's a lot of money for a coach who was dismissed in 2013 after an embarrassing 62-41 loss at Arizona State. Notre Dame fans should be able to sympathize with their rivals' plight.
