Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin announced in a statement Tuesday that student assistant Michael Richardson was fired for his actions on the sideline in the first half of Monday's Liberty Bowl win over West Virginia.

In separate incidents, Richardson dropped a shoulder into a Mountaineers offensive player, then later hit West Virginia cornerback Daryl Worley in the back of the helmet.

Sumlin was made aware of the incidents at halftime, and Richardson was told to remain in the locker room for the second half. A&M won, 45-37.

Richardson is a former Aggies linebacker who suffered a career-ending neck injury as a true freshman in 2012. He has been a student assistant since then. He apologized on Twitter for his actions.

Earlier in the day Tuesday, Sumlin was able to enjoy a lighter moment.

In addition to gearing up for the final six weeks of recruiting, Sumlin is looking for a new defensive coordinator after firing Mark Snyder earlier this month.
