Small-school prospect impresses at West Virginia's pro day

Representatives from 28 NFL teams -- including Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert, head coach Mike Tomlin and a number of position coaches, and Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley -- were on hand for West Virginia's pro day on Monday.

The workout was held indoors and was run on FieldTurf.

While West Virginia possesses a good number of quality prospects, a small-school player from Shepherd might have made the biggest impression on scouts.

Shepherd defensive end Shaneil Jenkins -- 6-foot-2 7/8, 281 pounds -- ran the 40-yard dash in 4.78 and 4.86 seconds. He had a 20-yard short shuttle time of 4.5 seconds. He did the three-cone drill in 7.25 seconds. He performed 24 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. Jenkins is described as looking the part; he's got a great physique. He was very impressive in his pro-day workout, showing quickness.

Only four teams showed up at Shepherd's pro day on March 31, so Jenkins took it upon himself to perform a workout in front of a larger audience of NFL scouts at West Virginia's pro day, and it might have earned him a low-round draft slot. He should at least be a priority free-agent pickup for a team following the NFL draft.

Punter Nick O'Toole -- 6-3 1/2, 217 -- showed a strong leg and had good hangtime.

Running back Wendell Smallwood -- 5-11, 207 -- ran the 40 in 4.41 and 4.42 seconds, and then stood on the rest of his numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine. In his positional workout, Smallwood surprised people with his ability to catch the football, and improved his status in the draft by showing off that skill.

Linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski -- 6-2 1/8, 240 -- stood on his combine numbers. He is a really good athlete who drops well into coverage and moves around better than you might think he would.

Safety K.J. Dillon -- 6-0 3/8, 207 -- had a 28-inch vertical, 4.43-second short shuttle time and 7.27-second three-cone time.

Safety Karl Joseph -- 5-9 7/8, 207 -- performed 19 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. Joseph still cannot work out due to a knee injury suffered in the 2015 season, but he expects to be ready in time for training camp.

Cornerback Daryl Worley -- 6-1, 200 -- ran the 40 in 4.54 and 4.66 seconds, but stumbled on that second attempt. He stood on the rest of his numbers from the combine.
