Smith played through concussion in Cowboys-49ers game

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has been praised all week for his bravery in gutting out a fractured rib and punctured lung last Sunday in leading his team to a come-from-behind win in San Francisco, but he wasn't the only quarterback to play through an injury in that game.

The Sacramento Bee reported on Wednesday that 49ers quarterback Alex Smith suffered a concussion during the game.

The team said Smith showed no signs of the concussion during the game, but reported symptoms afterward. Under new league rules he had to pass a neurological examination and be cleared by both his team and an independent neurological consultant before returning to practice, which he did Wednesday.

"Tough son of a gun," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said of Smith.
