Panthers waive former first-round pick Balmer, claim Felton

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers waived defensive end Kentwan Balmer on Thursday, one week after claiming the defensive tackle off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks.

The Panthers also announced before Thursday night's preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers that they waived fullback Rashawn Jackson and claimed fullback Jerome Felton off waivers from the Detroit Lions.

Balmer, a former first-round pick out of North Carolina, was claimed by the Panthers on Aug. 25 to replace Ron Edwards, who was placed on season-ending injured reserve after tearing his triceps last month.

Balmer started 11 games last season for Seattle but didn't play in any preseason games this year with Carolina.

Felton was in uniform for the game against the Steelers.
