Notre Dame sophomore wide receiver DaVaris Daniels has been suspended for the spring semester because of an academic issue.

Daniels, who was the team's No. 2 receiver this season, released a statement to ESPN.com. He said he "fully expect[s] to re-enroll in the summer semester to earn my degree and continue playing football."

IrishIllustrated.com reported that coach Brian Kelly is not expected to issue a statement on Daniels' suspension because of privacy laws.

Daniels (6-foot-1, 203 pounds) had 49 catches for 745 yards and seven touchdowns this season, and was expected to be the Irish's go-to receiver next season with the graduation of T.J. Jones, who led the Irish in all three receiving categories this season. Jones and Daniels are cousins.

Daniels' absence means he won't get to work in the spring with quarterback Everett Golson, who was suspended for the fall semester in 2013. Golson has re-enrolled and will go through spring drills.

Notre Dame's most experienced wide receiver during spring practice will be junior-to-be Chris Brown, who had 15 receptions this season, including a career-high five in the Pinstripe Bowl victory over Rutgers. Sophomores-to-be Will Fuller and Corey Robinson should benefit from extra practice reps with Daniels missing time.

Daniels' dad is Phillip Daniels, who starred at Georgia before playing defensive end for 15 seasons in the NFL.
