Lions' Smith carted off field after injuring ankle vs. Colts

INDIANAPOLIS -- Detroit safety Dwight Smith was taken off the field on a cart Sunday in the second quarter against the Indianapolis Colts.

The nine-year veteran injured his left ankle trying to make a tackle on a 2-yard touchdown run by Colts rookie Chad Simpson. He was helped to the cart, and his foot was elevated as he left the field.

The Lions said he would not return.
