Jets hire former Nebraska coach Callahan as assistant head coach

OMAHA, Neb. -- Former Nebraska coach Bill Callahan is returning to the NFL as the New York Jets' assistant head coach, reports the NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

The Jets' public relations office could not confirm the hiring. Callahan agent Gary O'Hagan did not immediately return a phone message from The Associated Press.

Nebraska fired Callahan on November 24th, the day after the Cornhuskers finished a 5-7 season. Callahan was 27-22 in four years at Nebraska.

Callahan had worked in the NFL from 1995 to 2003. He was the Oakland Raiders' head coach for two years, getting hired by Nebraska 10 days after the Raiders fired him at the end of the 2003 season.
