Patriots coach Bill Belichick, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and Bengals coach Marvin Lewis were among representatives from all 32 NFL teams at Louisville's pro day March 11. The event also drew several assistant coaches and coordinators as well as general managers, including Kevin Colbert of the Steelers, to watch 21 players work out.
Jamon Brown (6-foot-3 3/4, 322 pounds), an offensive lineman, ran the 40-yard dash in 5.09 seconds and ran just once because he wanted to keep fresh for his workout. He also had a 28-inch vertical and an 8-7 broad jump He ran a 4.70 short shuttle and 7.36 3-cone drill. He did not lift. Brown turned in a solid workout.
Running back Dominique Brown (6-foot-1 3/4, 236 pounds) had 40 times of 4.65 and 4.63 seconds. He had a 32 1/2-inch vertical and a 9-1 broad jump. He ran a 4.42 short shuttle and a 7.05 3-cone drill. Brown caught the ball really well for a running back, but scouts were a little disappointed that he looked like just a one-speed running back who doesn't have acceleration when he needs it.
Tight end Gerald Christian (6-foot-3, 245 pounds) posted times of 4.89 in the 40, 4.57 in the short shuttle and 7.20 in the 3-cone drill. He worked out, and the question for him is his size: Is he big enough to be a tight end, or is he an H-back?
Defensive end B.J. DuBose (6-foot-3 5/8, 289 pounds) couldn't work out at the pro day because he has a left quad injury.
Running back Michael Dyer was not allowed to work out at Louisville's pro day because he's academically ineligible this season. He did do everything at the combine except the bench press.
Charles Gaines (5-9 5/8, 189 pounds), a cornerback, only ran the 60-yard shuttle, which he did in 11.58 seconds. He also turned in a solid workout, showing a good ability to turn and run.
Gerod Holliman (6-foot, 216 pounds), a safety who led the nation in interceptions, turned in 40 times of 4.65 and 4.68 seconds. He had a 27-inch vertical and a 9-1 broad jump. He ran a 4.45 short shuttle and a 7.08 3-cone drill. Holliman has good ball skills, but he lacks the competitiveness that's needed to play safety in the NFL.
Lorenzo Mauldin (6-foot-3 5/8, 251 pounds) posted a 31-inch vertical, a 9-2 broad jump, a 7.26 3-cone drill, and a 12.62 in the 60-yard shuttle. He had a very strong workout and will probably be a 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL.
John Miller (6-foot-2 3/4, 310 pounds) ran once, posting a 5.20-second 40-yard dash. He also had a 28-inch vertical, an 8-10 broad jump, a 4.79 short shuttle and a 7.80 3-cone drill. He looked impressive in his workout. This is a good football player.
DeVante Parker (6-foot-2 7/8, 212 pounds) stood on his numbers from the combine and had a fabulous workout. He appears to be over the injury that caused him to miss the first half of last season, and his combine and pro-day performances have really helped him a lot. He'll be an early first-round pick.
James Sample (6-foot-2 1/8, 205 pounds) ran a 4.43-second short shuttle and an 11.33-second 60-yard shuttle. He also had 17 strength lifts. Some consider him a safety prospect, but he also has the size and speed that teams like to see at the cornerback position.
Outside linebacker Deiontres Mount (6-4 3/4, 248) ran the 40 in 4.62 and 4.64 seconds (though, it was said he kind of bobbed and weaved during his runs and might have run faster). He had a 31-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-11 broad jump. He had a 4.31-second short shuttle time and a 7.09-second three-cone time. He performed 28 strength lifts. Mount had a real good workout. He'll likely be a third-day draft pick because he has one very valuable trait: He can rush the passer.
