Coughlin indicates Giants DE Umenyiora not likely to face Jets

New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Monday that he's "very concerned" about getting defensive end Osi Umenyiora back from an ankle injury in time for Saturday's game against the New York Jets.

Coughlin, speaking to reporters on a conference call, also expressed doubt about Umenyiora returning before the end of the regular season. Umenyiora, who has missed the Giants' past three games with the ankle injury, would have to show "some major improvement" to return any time soon, according to Coughlin.

Umenyiora suffered the injury during a Nov. 28 loss to the New Orleans Saints. A source close to the situation told the New York Daily News that Umenyiora's ankle is "still real sore" and that the defensive end is having a hard time pushing off the same leg.

Umenyiora has battled injuries throughout the season. He missed the first three games of the season following knee surgery during the preseason. In the eight games he has played, Umenyiora has recorded seven sacks.
