Saints QB Drew Brees tied a club record with six touchdown passes.

It was over when ...
Saints quarterback Drew Brees stopped throwing touchdown passes. The Saints jumped out to an early 14-0 lead when Brees connected with Marques Colston and Robert Meachem. The Saints added two more touchdowns in the second quarter and were never threatened.

Game ball
Brees is an obvious choice, but TE Jeremy Shockey had a breakout game for the Saints, catching a pair of touchdown passes in the second quarter. Shockey was disappointing last year for the for the Saints, failing to score a touchdown. This already explosive Saints offense would receive a huge boost if Shockey can continue this type of production.

Key stat
The Saints defense held the Lions to only 33 rushing yards.

Noteworthy
Lions rookie QB Matthew Stafford made his NFL debut with three interceptions. ... Saints RB Mike Bell rushed 28 times for 143 yards, starting for the injured Pierre Thomas. ... Eight different receivers caught passes for the Saints.
