The Colts made the risky decision to go for it on fourth-and-1 from the 47 early in the fourth quarter. Dominic Rhodes was dropped for a 2-yard loss, the Bears drove the short field for the clinching touchdown and that was the ballgame.
Game ball
Bears rookie RB Matt Forte had about as good a pro debut as he ever could have imagined. The second-round pick amassed 123 yards on the ground and one touchdown, while adding three catches for 18 yards. He also showed impressive speed, going 50 yards on his scoring run.
Key stat
It may seem like an obscure stat, but perhaps the best indicator of what unfolded in this game was the amount of timeouts the Colts used outside of two minutes. Normally one of the most efficient teams in the league, Indianapolis squandered two timeouts on one first-quarter drive and was down to one timeout in the fourth quarter after spending one in the third quarter and wasting a second on a failed challenge later in the third. Peyton Manning missed all of the preseason and the timeouts were a chief symptom of the overall confusion that seemed to engulf the Colts at times.
Noteworthy
In his first game with the Bears after playing his first four seasons in Detroit, Chicago RB Kevin Jones had 45 yards on 13 carries. Colts RB Joseph Addai and TE Dallas Clark both left the game with injuries. ... Veteran Colts WR Marvin Harrison played in his first regular-season game since Week 7 of last year. He finished with eight catches for 76 yards but had a costly fumble that Bears LB Lance Briggs returned for a TD.
