Emmy Award-winning 'America's Game' returns to NFL Network

2007 New York Giants episode kicks off new season on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 9 p.m. ET

Emmy Award-winning actor James Gandolfini narrates America's Game: 2007 New York Giants

The New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots in one of the greatest Super Bowls of all-time and now they will be featured in the premiere episode of the new season of the Emmy Award-winning sports series America's Game. Following the premiere of the Giants episode, the NFL Films-produced series will feature five of the best teams that didn't win a Super Bowl in America's Game: The Missing Rings.

Premiering on Wednesday, September 3 at 9:00 p.m. ET in high definition, the 60-minute critically acclaimed documentary series begins with America's Game: 2007 New York Giants. It features the New York Giants' Super Bowl-winning season through the eyes of three of the pillars of the team, head coach Tom Coughlin, quarterback Eli Manning and Pro Bowl veteran defensive end Michael Strahan. Emmy Award-winning and New Jersey born actor James Gandolfini provides the narration for the Giants episode.

This season NFL Films examines five of the best teams that didn't win their final game in America's Game: The Missing Rings. Three of these teams lost in the Super Bowl and two of the teams lost in the playoffs.

"What's great about The Missing Rings series is their Shakespearean arc. These teams are the NFL's version of tragic heroes. Their story is so compelling, so emotionally fraught, we find ourselves rooting for them even though we know they're destined for doom," said Steve Sabol, NFL Films President. "The Giants' historic season was a roller coaster that ended with one of the best games in history. It made perfect sense for us to kick off the new season of America's Game with their story."

Each episode of America's Game is a personal portrait told by the men who lived it and felt it, not by the analysts or journalists who watched or reported it. Coughlin, Strahan and Manning reveal inside stories and viewpoints about the Giants' season that concluded with their thrilling victory over the previously undefeated New England Patriots. NFL Films bring fans into the huddle, onto the sidelines and in the locker room to see and hear how the Giants pulled off this memorable season.

On the other side of the celebrations of Super Bowl winners are the teams that got close but did not win the final game and earn the ultimate prize, a Super Bowl ring. In America's Game: The Missing Rings the following teams will be featured in individual episodes:

» 1969 Minnesota Vikings

» 1981 San Diego Chargers

» 1988 Cincinnati Bengals

» 1990 Buffalo Bills

» 1998 Minnesota Vikings

The Missing Rings episodes will premiere on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 10 p.m. ET and airs for five consecutive weeks with the final episode on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 10 p.m. ET. The order of the episodes, interviews and narrator for each episode will be announced later.

Once again, NFL Films will be using its award-winning production techniques for this series on NFL Network. For each team, three or four players and coaches were interviewed at length, most for more than three hours. The first person accounts create intimate, emotional, and character-driven films with uncommon depth that look and feel quite unlike anything that has come before.

Gandolfini follows a "Who's Who" of Hollywood stars who have loaned their voices to this series, serving as narrators for various episodes. Alec Baldwin, Laurence Fishburne, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Martin Sheen, Tom Selleck and Bruce Willis all can be heard on previous episodes of America's Game.

NFL Network airs seven days a week, 24 hours a day on a year-round basis and is the only television network fully dedicated to the NFL and the sport of football. For more information, log on to www.nfl.com/nflnetwork. NFL.com is the exclusive internet home of NFL videos and NFL Network.
