Three biggest takeaways
- Earliest possible litmus test. The opening game is a whopper for ratings, and an important marker for the Cowboys, who are starting the Brian Schottenheimer era against the defending champions, who swept them last season by a total of 62 points. How much more explosive will the offense be with George Pickens and a healthy Dak Prescott? Can the defense stop the run? What better measuring stick than the opponent that had the top-ranked defense and rushing attack in the league last year.
- A brutal holiday season. The scheduling Santas gave the Cowboys a heap of coal for their games during the holidays. It starts in Week 12 with the Eagles, then a blockbuster of a Thanksgiving game against the Chiefs, followed by a road game against the Lions, home games against the Vikings and Chargers, and a Christmas Day game at Washington. That gauntlet that will determine Dallas' season.
- They can roll up some early wins. After the opener in Philadelphia, the Cowboys have an opening to stack a few wins, with games against the Giants, Bears, Jets and Panthers, who combined for just 18 victories last season. Schottenheimer will face fellow rookie head coaches in Ben Johnson (Bears) and Aaron Glenn (Jets) during that stretch.
NFL Research note
The Cowboys will be the first team since the 2011 Packers to play in the Kickoff Game, on Thanksgiving Day and on Christmas Day in the same season. Green Bay went 3-0 to hit the prime-time trifecta, finishing the season with a league-best 15-1 record.

Three biggest takeaways
- A beast of a schedule. The Giants have the hardest strength of schedule in the NFL based on last season’s results. They have 10 games against 2024 playoff teams (the Eagles and Lions each have 11 such games), including two games each against their division rivals, the Super Bowl champion Eagles and the NFC conference finalist Commanders. The NFC East plays the AFC West and the NFC North this season and both of those divisions sent three teams to the playoffs in 2024. The Giants play all six of those teams.
- Brutal opening stretch. The Giants believe Russell Wilson and an improved roster give them a chance to win some games, but the first half of the season does them no favors. They open on the road with back-to-back games against the Commanders and Cowboys, then play at home in prime time against the Chiefs. They host the Chargers in Week 4, before making a trip to New Orleans, which is followed by a short-week Thursday night game against the Eagles. Then, just for good measure, their schedule next has them at Denver and at Philadelphia.
- Chance for a quarterback change. The Giants’ bye week doesn’t come until Week 14, which is traditionally when teams make quarterback changes. How long will the Giants wait to insert Jaxson Dart if the losses pile up early? Might the post-Thursday night mini-bye following Week 6 be in play?
NFL Research note
Despite finishing the 2024 season tied for the worst overall record, the Giants enter the 2025 campaign with the hardest strength of schedule in the league. For context, the two other three-win teams from last season, the Browns and Titans, rank 13th and 29th in SOS, respectively.

Week 16: at Commanders (Saturday)
Week 17: at Bills
Week 18: Commanders (TBD)
Three biggest takeaways
- A champion’s lineup. Win the Super Bowl with a lot of bold-faced name players and you get a schedule with a lot of marquee slots and not much routine. The Eagles, of course, have the Thursday night opener afforded the champion, but they also play on a Friday (Black Friday), Saturday (Week 16 doubleheader), Thursday night again, and have two Monday night games.
- The champs will be tested. There are two particularly noteworthy stretches in Philadelphia's schedule. After opening against the Cowboys, the Eagles take on the reigning AFC champions at Kansas City, host the Rams (who gave the Eagles the toughest playoff test last season), then travel to Tampa before returning home to face the Broncos. That’s four straight games against teams that made the playoffs in 2024. Following their midseason bye, the Eagles are on the road in Green Bay, home on a short week against the Lions, on the road at Dallas, home against the Bears on a short week and on the road at the Chargers.
- The final sprint. If the Eagles mount a title defense, they’ll be playoff ready -- especially their defense -- after their closing games. The final three weeks are at the Commanders, at the Bills and home against the Commanders in the finale.
NFL Research note
The Eagles are the only team currently scheduled to play on five or more days of the week during the 2025 regular season (Sunday, Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday). The Chargers are set to play on four different days, with the possibility of a fifth, if their Week 17 game (currently TBD) takes place on Saturday.

Commanders' 2025 schedule
Week 1: Giants
Week 2: at Packers (TNF)
Week 3: Raiders
Week 4: at Falcons
Week 5: at Chargers
Week 6: Bears (MNF)
Week 7: at Cowboys

Week 11: Dolphins (Madrid)
Week 12: BYE

Week 14: at Vikings
Week 15: at Giants
Week 16: Eagles (Saturday)
Week 17: Cowboys (Christmas)
Week 18: at Eagles (TBD)
Three biggest takeaways
- The Commanders are beloved again. The latest evidence -- the NFL put them in an international showcase for the first time in nine years. That’s no accident. The league is, for the first time in decades, happy to have the spotlight on the Commanders, who have executed a breathtakingly fast turnaround in the two years since Josh Harris bought the team, a new football braintrust took over, Jayden Daniels became a star and the embarrassing controversies subsided.
- There’s a rough midseason stretch. Here’s the gauntlet that will test the Commanders, starting in Week 5: at the Chargers, home against the Bears, on the road against the Cowboys and Chiefs back to back, home for the Seahawks and Lions and then in Madrid against the Dolphins. Whew. That’s an intense, exhausting run that includes a cross country flight, three teams that were in the playoffs last year, a heated rival and a trip to Europe.
- Plenty of suspense. The schedulers love drama, which is why the Commanders don’t get their first shot to avenge their NFC Championship Game loss to the Eagles until Week 16 and then have the Eagles again two weeks later in the regular-season finale. Those two games are likely to go a long way toward determining the division champion and playoff seeding for both teams.
NFL Research note
The Commanders are the only team this year to finish the regular season with four consecutive division games.
