Three biggest takeaways

  1. All quarterbacks, all the time. The overhauled defense will be in the spotlight, because the Bills play a murderers' row of quarterbacks this season: Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, potentially Aaron Rodgers, Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts, plus Baker Mayfield, C.J. Stroud and Tua Tagovailoa.
  2. Glide path to the playoffs? The last four games should, on paper, give the Bills a chance to fatten their record and bolster their seeding on the way to the postseason. They have games against the Patriots, Browns and Jets sandwiching the showdown with the Eagles.
  3. Favorable strength of schedule. Of the teams widely expected to challenge the Chiefs for AFC supremacy, the Bills have, by a good margin, the easiest strength of schedule: tied for 23rd-most difficult. The Texans are next, and they are tied for 18th. The Bengals are 14th, while the Ravens are ninth and the Steelers 10th. The Chargers are tied for 11th with the Chiefs themselves.

NFL Research note

Six of the Bills' first seven opponents missed last season's playoffs ... and four of their final five foes did the same.

Three biggest takeaways

  1. Early shot at the Bills. Will this help? Who knows. But the Dolphins get the Bills -- in Buffalo -- when the weather is still good. If the Fins are ever going to mount a serious challenge in the division, they have to start here. Miami hasn't beaten Buffalo since Week 3 of the 2022 season.
  2. An especially tough middle stretch. The Dolphins host the Ravens on a short week, then have the Bills before a date with the Commanders in Spain. All three of those opponents finished in the top five in scoring last season.
  3. Divisional wrangling early and late. With the Jets and Patriots both in rebuilding mode -- and with new coaches -- the Dolphins will get early and late looks at the progress of the teams hoping to supplant Miami as the primary threat to Buffalo. The Dolphins have the Patriots in Week 2 and the Jets in Week 4 -- and then face those two again in Week 14 (Jets) and Week 18 (Patriots). Those bookends could give us a glimpse of where the division is headed in the next few years, too.

NFL Research note

Over the past three seasons, the Dolphins have the fourth-best home record in the league at 18-7.

Week 18: Dolphins (TBD)

Three biggest takeaways

  1. A scheduling solid. The league formula did the Patriots a favor, launching the Mike Vrabel era with one of the easiest strength of schedules (30th overall). It starts with Las Vegas, and includes a midseason stretch of games against the Saints, Titans and Browns, all of whom could be playing rookie quarterbacks.
  2. The Vrabowl. It's Week 7 in Tennessee. Is the team Vrabel just took over already better than the team that is still rebuilding after firing him following the 2023 season?
  3. Not all the way back. When Vrabel was a player for the Patriots, their 1 p.m. ET kickoffs were limited. Clearly the schedule-makers don't believe New England is all the way back yet. The Pats are currently scheduled to play 12 games in Sunday's first window and just one in the second -- though they do have three prime-time tilts.

NFL Research note

New England is one of just three teams (along with Baltimore and Tennessee) scheduled for three straight road games.

Week 17: Patriots

Week 18: at Bills (TBD)

Three biggest takeaways

  1. A much lower-key campaign. After the league spent the past two seasons jamming the Jets into every prominent viewing window, despite results that didn't match the hype, the departure of Aaron Rodgers and the arrival of all-business coach Aaron Glenn mean the volume is about to be lowered on Gang Green's profile. This season, the Jets play just twice in prime time (Monday night and Thursday night) and have a game in London. Every other scheduled game is slated for the 1 p.m. Sunday window. Glenn has said he wants to move in silence -- the schedule-makers gave him a hand.
  2. The Fields/Rodgers revenge game. The schedule-makers have a sense of humor. Let's assume Rodgers does, in fact, sign with the Steelers. That makes the Week 1 game delicious, as New York opens the season hosting Pittsburgh. The Steelers originally wanted to keep Justin Fields, despite benching him in favor of Russell Wilson last season. Fields left for the Jets instead. Now, Rodgers is poised to take his place in Pittsburgh. So much drama.
  3. Measuring stick. An awful lot has changed around the Jets this offseason -- new coach, new GM, new QB, even a new punter. Week 2, at home against the Bills, provides a good early barometer of where this team stands. Nobody in Florham Park views this as a rebuilding season. This game will give us an early indication if they are right.

NFL Research note

The Jets open the season with three straight games against playoff teams from the 2024 campaign, but they face five consecutive squads that missed the postseason in Weeks 13-17.
