Baltimore Colts

"We pretty much dominated the AFC." - Ernie Accorsi

The 1970 Baltimore Colts finished the regular season 11-2-1 and beat the Cowboys in Super Bowl V. Coached by Don McCafferty and led by 37-year-old QB Johnny Unitas, the Colts had the best record in the AFC. Unitas, in his final season as a full-time starter, threw more interceptions (18) than touchdowns (14) but the Colts managed to enter the playoffs on a 4-game win streak. They beat the Bengals 17-0 in the Divisional Round and won the AFC title with a 27-17 victory over the Raiders. The Baltimore defense got Pro Bowl seasons from safety Jerry Logan, who had six interceptions and linebacker Mike Curtis (five interceptions). On offense, the Colts finished third in the NFL in passing yards and wide receiver Roy Jefferson caught seven touchdowns. In the Super Bowl, Unitas threw a 75-yard TD before leaving the game due to a rib injury. After an interception by Curtis with about a minute left, Baltimore’s Jim O’Brien kicked a 32-yard field goal with under 10 seconds left to pull the Colts ahead, 16-13.
