Baltimore Colts

First NFL Team to Lose the Super Bowl.

The 1968 Baltimore Colts went 13-1, easily won the NFL Championship, and were 18-point favorites against the AFL champion Jets in Super Bowl III before losing in one of pro football’s biggest upsets. Coached by Don Shula, the Colts had scored nearly 29 points per game during the regular season while giving up a league-low 10.3 on average. All-Pro 34-year-old QB Earl Morrall, led the NFL with 26 touchdowns and was named MVP. On defense, cornerback Bobby Boyd had an All-Pro season with eight interceptions. Heading into the Super Bowl against the Jets, the Colts seemed invincible, having won 10 straight games, including a 34-0 rout of the Browns in the NFL Championship. But in the Super Bowl, before which Jets QB Joe Namath boldly guaranteed victory, Morrall threw 3 interceptions and 0 touchdowns as the Jets stunned the Colts, 16-7.
