The Philadelphia Eagles won back-to-back championships in 1948 and 1949 with records of 9-2-1 and 11-1-0 respectively. After losing the NFL Championship in 1947, In 1948 the Eagles outscored their opponents 376 to 156. In a game known as the "Philly Blizzard", Hall of Fame halfback Steve Van Buren scored the game's only touchdown as the Eagles beat the Cardinals 7-0 in the 1948 NFL Championship. In 1949, the Eagles led the NFL in scoring while giving up a league-low 11.2 average – and beat the Los Angeles Rams in the title game, 14-0.  Van Buren led the NFL in both seasons in rushing yards (945, 1,146) and rushing TDs (10, 11). Pete Pihos, another future Hall of Famer, played offense and defense and had 11 TD catches in 1948. Tommy Thompson, the Eagles’ veteran QB, led the league in passing TDs (25) and Passer Rating (98.4) in 1948.
