Steve Young's Game-Winning 49 Yard TD Run

"This guy's amazing, I want to be Steve Young." - Michael Vick

Steve Young’s magician-like escapability and running prowess were shown during one game-winning run on October 30, 1988 at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. In an NFC battle between 5-3 teams, the 49ers were losing to the Vikings, 21-17, late in the fourth quarter and had the ball near midfield. Young, the 49ers’ Hall of Fame quarterback, dropped back, looking to throw. The defense quickly closed in on him, though, and a sack seemed imminent after he disappeared amid a scrum of offensive and defensive players. Somehow, Young ducked and spun out of it and emerged running upfield with the ball. Two Vikings looked ready to tackle him, but Young switched direction and ran around them to the left, then broke another tackle, and then another, into open space. Aided by a blocker, at the 30, he cut back to the middle on a dime, following blockers and falling into the end zone. The touchdown won the game, 24-21, for the 49ers, who went on to beat the Vikings again in the playoffs and Super Bowl 23 over the Bengals.
