Week 3 - Marino vs. O'Brien Duel

"Man, I threw six touchdowns in a game, and we lost." - Dan Marino

On September 21, 1986, the Jets and Dolphins met for an early-season game at Giants Stadium – and fans of offense would not be disappointed. The contest, which the Jets won in overtime, 51-45, on a touchdown pass from quarterback Ken O’Brien to wide receiver Wesley Walker, featured 13 combined touchdowns. The Dolphins’ Hall of Famer, Dan Marino, threw for 448 yards and six touchdowns; O’Brien passed for 479 and four touchdowns. The Dolphins led 7-3 after the first quarter, and then everything went haywire: in the second quarter alone, the Jets scored four touchdowns, two of them on catches by Walker totaling more than 100 yards, giving them a 31-21 halftime lead. Two TD throws from Marino in the third quarter pulled the Dolphins ahead, 38-31. Late in the fourth, Walker caught another touchdown on the final play of regulation, for 21 yards, to tie it at 45 before his game-winning grab in overtime. The combined 96 points were the third-most since 1970; the 927 yards tossed by the quarterbacks was a record that endured for 25 years.
