Dick "Night Train" Lane

"When he hit you, it wasn't like 'who it me?' You were out." - Lem Barney

Dick Lane, who was known as Night Train Lane, holds the NFL’s single-season record for interceptions, with 14 – and he remarkably accomplished the feat in 1952, when seasons were just 12 games. Lane was also known for his vicious style of tackling, which led to several rules changes. A cornerback originally from Austin, Tex., Lane signed with the Rams after serving four years in the Army. A blazing-fast runner at 6-foot-1 and 194 pounds, Lane was known for wrapping players around their neck and tackling them to the ground, known as the "Night Train Necktie”. This tactic was subsequently banned. Lane, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974, was also infamous as a gambler on the field, intercepting 68 passes in a 14-year career. Lane made four Pro Bowls playing for the Chicago Cardinals in the 1950s, and three Pro Bowls in the 1960s as a Detroit Lion.
