Ozzie Newsome

"How many times can you go into the Hall of Fame?" - Brian Billick

Ozzie Newsome was a Hall of Fame tight end and the NFL’s first African-American general manager. Nicknamed “The Wizard,” he was the Baltimore Ravens’ GM from 2002 to 2018. He was the architect of two Ravens’ Super Bowl teams: for the first, during the 2000 season, he was the team’s Vice President of Player Personnel; for the second, in 2012, he was general manager. While Newsome has been one of the most effective NFL executives of the 21st century, he first gained fame as a player. A native of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Newsome was a first round draft pick of the Browns in 1978 and played 13 seasons with the team, making three Pro Bowls and racking up 47 touchdown catches and nearly 8,000 yards receiving. After retiring as a player, he became a Browns scout and later the team’s Director of Pro Personnel. When the team became the Baltimore Ravens in 1996, Newsome was named Vice President of Player Personnel. That year, Newsome drafted Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis, future Hall of Famers.
