Warren Moon

"Warren Moon paved the way, and it's not said enough." - Nate Burleson

Warren Moon was a Hall of Fame quarterback in two professional leagues: The Canadian Football League and the NFL. A 6-foot-3 Los Angeles native, Moon played QB at the University of Washington but went undrafted in 1978; at that time, many coaches, scouts, and fans perceived African-Americans as less capable of playing the position. He played six seasons for the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL, winning five Grey Cups, that league’s equivalent of a Super Bowl. In 1984, the Houston Oilers signed the 27-year-old Moon – and he proved the stereotypes wrong, making nine Pro Bowls, including eight straight between 1988 and 1995. He twice led the NFL in passing yards, with 4,689 and 4,690 in 1990 and 1991, respectively. After a decade in Houston, he played three seasons with the Vikings, two with Seattle, and two with the Chiefs before retiring with nearly 50,000 yards passing. In 2006, he became the first black quarterback and the first undrafted QB to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
