"Mean" Joe Greene

"I was terrified of 'Mean' Joe Greene. He was just a nasty, nasty lineman." - Jon Hein

Mean Joe Greene, a Hall of Fame defensive tackle for the Steelers who twice won NFL Defensive Player of the Year, was part of the renowned “Steel Curtain” defense in the 1970s. In his 13 NFL seasons, all with Pittsburgh, he played in 10 Pro Bowls and was a member of four Super Bowl championship teams. A native of Temple, Texas, Greene attended little-known North Texas State (now University of North Texas) but was the fourth overall pick in the 1969 NFL Draft. Greene was an intense competitor whose nickname wasn’t all too mysterious. He hit quarterbacks below the knee and in the head, spit in opponents’ faces and kicked them in the groin, and grabbed officials. “I don’t know how many other teams would’ve tolerated my antics,” he said, looking back. His image was transformed, though, in 1979 after starring in a Coca-Cola commercial. In the ad, as the 6-foot-4, 275-pound Greene limped down a locker room tunnel after a game, looking sad and defeated, he was approached by a cute kid who offered Greene a Coca-Cola. Greene chugged the drink, restoring his mood, and tossed the kid his towel and smiled. After his playing career, Greene became a Steelers coach and scout before moving to Flower Mound, Texas.
