Walt Garrison
In 2018, Cowboys fullback Walt Garrison was inducted into the Hall of Fame – only it wasn’t for football. It was for professional rodeo. Garrison, who was born in Denton, Texas on July 23, 1944, spent his childhood riding horses and steers. He attended Oklahoma State, where he led the Big 8 in rushing yards in 1964 and where he was a member of the university’s rodeo team. After he was chosen by Dallas in the fifth round of the 1966 Draft, a two-horse trailer was included in his signing bonus. The 6-foot, 205-pounder played nine seasons for the Cowboys (during offseasons, he competed on the professional rodeo circuit), making one Pro Bowl and winning a Super Bowl in the 1971 season. After nine seasons, he retired due to a knee injury and remained involved in professional rodeo as a spokesperson for Smokeless Tobacco. Today he lives on his ranch in Texas. “His first love,” Garrison’s son, Marty, once said, “was rodeo.”
