ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills quarterback Trent Edwards needs further evaluation after sustaining the second concussion of his NFL career, leaving the starter's status uncertain for this weekend's game at Carolina.
Bills coach Dick Jauron said Monday that Edwards was healthy enough to travel home with the team after he was knocked out during the second quarter of Sunday's 16-13 overtime victory over the New York Jets.
"We'll take that day to day and see how he comes out of this thing," Jauron said.
Rather than answer a question about whether he hoped Edwards would be able to start against the Panthers this Sunday, Jauron said, "I'm hopeful he's healthy."
If Edwards can't play, Ryan Fitzpatrick would take over as the starter. He completed 10 of 25 passes for 116 yards and one touchdown in rallying the Bills past the Jets.
Edwards was hurt when he was sacked while sandwiched between Jets defenders David Harris and Calvin Pace, who drove the quarterback backward into the turf. Edwards, who's in his third NFL season, also sustained a concussion during an Oct. 5 loss at Arizona.
Tight end Shawn Nelson also will be monitored this week after sustaining a concussion. Jauron didn't have an update on the injuries to starting defensive tackle Kyle Williams (shoulder strain), starting safety Donte Whitner (ankle) and starting cornerback Terrence McGee (bruised chest).
Whitner had just returned after missing two weeks with torn ligaments in his thumb. Buffalo also is without starting safety Bryan Scott, who has missed three games with a sprained left ankle, and starting right tackle Jonathan Scott, who has missed a week with an ankle injury.
