Marty Lyons grants wishes of terminally-ill children

As a member of the New York Sack Exchange, Marty Lyons gave Jets fans a reason to cheer his work on the field. Off the field, the 1984 NFL Man of the Year works even harder to give kids who are facing terminal illnesses the courage to wish for more.

In his 1993 Pro Football Hall of Fame induction speech, Walter Payton recognized the impact we all can have on each other's lives. And the legacy of the 1977 NFL Man of the Year lives on through the actions and service of all the winners of that award which now bears his name, including Derrick Brooks, Kurt Warner, Marty Lyons, Troy Vincent, and Warrick Dunn.

When he was just 18 years old, Warrick Dunn's mother lost her life in an ambush. He was forced to become a single parent to his younger brothers and sisters. That experience drives the 2004 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year to help single parents with down-payment assistance and furnishings to set a foundation that truly supports families. It's not a handout -- it's a "hand up" to individuals who are trying to help themselves.

Growing up in the city of Trenton taught Troy Vincent tough but important lessons. And the character it developed in the 2002 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year continues to push him to give back to his community and empower those closest to its issues to find solutions. His actions certainly speak louder than words as he leaves his legacy beyond the football field.
