Uncertainty is always in abundance at this time of the NFL calendar.
For the Philadelphia Eagles, questions have revolved around whether defensive coordinator Vic Fangio would return for a third season with the team as the 67-year-old mulled retirement.
While the Fangio situation has been uncertain, it's recently leaned toward his return -- though that could change again -- NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo reported Sunday. Garafolo added that the team hasn't confirmed or denied anything to this point.
Jimmy Kempski of the Philly Voice first reported the news, noting the Eagles had considered other available DCs just in case.
Fangio has a long and storied NFL coaching history. He got his start as a linebackers coach for the New Orleans Saints in 1986 at the age of 28 and held that role for nine seasons before becoming the Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator from 1995-98.
He's since coordinated defenses for the Indianapolis Colts (1999-2001), Houston Texans (2002-05), San Francisco 49ers (2011-14), Chicago Bears (2015-18), Miami Dolphins (2023) and Eagles. He was also the Denver Broncos head coach from 2019-2021.
Fangio has guided the Philly defense to tremendous results over the past two seasons. The unit helped fuel the Eagles' run to winning Super Bowl LIX, ranking second in points allowed and first in total defense. In 2025, Fangio's fifth-ranked scoring defense kept the Eagles afloat in countless games as the offense floundered.
He is vital to the Eagles bouncing back from a disappointing wild-card exit for a number of reasons.
His talent as a defensive play-caller and schemer is a given, but it's also getting late in the game, with several teams having reduced the candidate pool by filling defensive coordinator vacancies already.
As of right now, it's trending the right way for Eagles fans, but they'll be keeping an eye on any official news with much anticipation.
