Steve Smith is quitting Twitter, but not without offering up a nice little analogy as a parting shot.
"Internet courage is like a cover-2 corner," Smith said Thursday, according to the Ravens'Â official website. "You got a safety over the top and you feel better about yourself. You got that one-on-one coverage, you back off a little bit. That's how I look at Twitter."
Smith said he came to his decision after coming across too much needless negativity directed at athletes and celebrities. Smith would occasionally tangle with critics, but stopped interacting after his wife said he was setting a bad example for his children.
"I'll kill you on Twitter, so I had to stop," Smith lamented.
The back story of why he joined Twitter is a classic Steve Smith story in itself. Smith was made aware that an individual was impersonating him and sending inappropriate direct messages to other users. Smith signed up to personally right that injustice, and then grew to enjoy the popular social media platform.
But now ... it's over.
"I just think at the end of the day, what's on my Twitter feed and what's going on in the world, I don't think they should be on the same level."
Smith plans to use his feed as the dreaded "marketing tool" going forward, which is kind of depressing. The lesson, as always: Trolls ruin everything.
