Randy Moss: I thought Bill Belichick call was a prank

Bill Belichick seems to specialize in the short-term rental of talented malcontent players.

We've seen it most recently with the (second) acquisition of running back LeGarrette Blount, but as Randy Moss knows, his penchant for bringing in controversial players goes well beyond these past few seasons.

Moss just didn't believe it at first.

In a recent interview with the Patriots' official website, Moss recounted the story of when Belichick first called him on draft day back in 2007. After two miserable seasons in Oakland, Moss was not ready to think something good could happen to him.

"When I came from Oakland, I was in a dark place," Moss said, per CSN New England. "I was in a dark place because I was there for two years; I just got traded from the Vikings. Things wasn't going too well in California. I was away from home. My career wasn't going the way I wanted it to go.

"I remember I was in Houston, Texas, during the (2007) draft and I got a call from Bill Belichick. I thought it was one of my friends playing. I was like 'Who is this?' He was like, 'Uh, it's Bill Belichick.' I was like, 'Man, get real! Who is this?'"

Belichick later told Moss that the trade would only go through if he was there by 10 a.m. the next morning, capping what must have been one of the most awkward interactions between two football celebrities that we can think of.
