Have you been Creedbombed today?
That's unlikely, but let's not give up hope it happens in the future. Carolina Panthers linebacker Ben Jacobs, along with tight end Greg Olsen, have started a tradition of sneaking up on each other to belt out inane lyrics from popular Creed singles of yesteryear.
This is a real thing that happens, and it makes me want the Panthers to win the Super Bowl 398-0.
"Hold me now! I'm six feet from the edge and I'm thinking," Jacobs sang Wednesday during his walk onto the practice field, according to The Charlotte Observer. That's a lyric from Creed's 2001 suicide-prevention banger "One Last Breath".
For the uninitiated, Creed was a regrettable turn-of-the-millennium post-grunge rock act that sold tens of millions of albums. Some people like Creed. Many, many, many others believe Creed to be the literal worst.
"The key is you've got to make really deep, direct eye contact," Jacobs said, describing his best Scott Stapp impression. "So if you Creedbomb someone you've got to look them directly in the eye."
Jacobs admitted that he still listens to Creed despite the winking nature of Creedbombing.
"We were just talking about how when we were younger bands like Creed and Nickelback were big," Jacobs said. "We were laughing with the raspy voices and how much we still kind of liked the songs. It just started turning into singing it randomly, you don't even think about it. It's taken on a life of its own."
Here's to hoping this ends with Cam Newton belting out "My Sacrifice"Â on a 50-yard line podium in Santa Clara. Meanwhile, this might be just what Creed needs to get itself back in the mainstream after a decade of mass public ridicule. Best of luck, guys.
