Giants rookie WR Nicks sprains left foot; RB Ward dislocates left elbow

Hakeem Nicks, the New York Giants' first-round draft pick, was taken off the field on a cart after apparently hurting his left foot during the fourth quarter of Sunday's season opener against the visiting Washington Redskins.

Nicks was injured during a 7-yard reception when Redskins linebacker London Fletcher fell on the receiver's left leg. Trainers checked on Nicks on the sideline before he was carted off the field.

FOX reported during its game broadcast that Nicks suffered a sprained left foot and X-rays were negative. Nicks, who had two catches for 18 yards, later returned to the sideline and used crutches while wearing a walking boot on his lower left leg.

Also, Giants backup halfback Danny Ware dislocated his left elbow while returning the opening kickoff.

Ware, New York's third back behind Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, was hurt when he was tackled at the end of the 17-yard return. After being treated on the field, Ware walked to the locker room.
