If the Los Angeles Rams know whichquarterback they plan to grab with the top overall pick in the draft, they're not about to leak it.
Asked if the team had decided between Cal's Jared Goff or North Dakota State's Carson Wentz, coach Jeff Fisher continued to play games with the media on Tuesday, saying only: "Maybe."
The Rams don't plan to reveal their preference until Thursday night, with Fisher saying: "We'll get in touch with the player just prior to putting the card in."
In the past, teams trading up to No. 1 have signed the top pick well before the draft. The Rams, though, plan to keep everything under wraps, a decision the NFL certainly prefers as we draw closer to the biggest event of the offseason.
Is it really a secret, though? NFL Media's Michael Silver believes the Rams prefer Goff, as does ESPN's Adam Schefter. Pro Football Talk also reported that "a very strong sense" has emerged that the former Cal star is headed south to Los Angeles.
It doesn't stop there, with NFL Media's Daniel Jeremiah, Bucky Brooks, Charles Davis, Charley Casserly, Lance Zierlein and Chad Reuter all mocking Goff to the Rams at No. 1. Even Sam Farmer of Los Angeles Times has switched his guess, tweeting Saturday: "Although I first thought the Rams' pick was Carson Wentz, I believe I misread the signs. Mark me down for Jared Goff."
Barring a stunning surprise by the Rams, the NFL's worst-kept secret will play out according to plan come Thursday night.
