Tony Romo out for rest of season with clavicle fracture

The official diagnosis on Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo confirmed the team's worst fears, but also came with a bit of hope for the future.

Speaking on 105.3 FM Friday morning, owner Jerry Jones said that Romo suffered a hairline fracture in his left clavicle against the Panthers on Thursday. However, the fracture will not require surgery, giving Romo a standard timetable to recover which will not infringe on the offseason. According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, he should be good as new in eight weeks. Rapoport added Kellen Moore is expected to be activated to the 53-man roster to serve as Matt Cassel's backup.

This was a lost season for Cowboys fans who expected Jones to deliver them another Super Bowl. But the positive news is that almost all of Dallas' best pieces are still under team control. Dez Bryant will be back healthy in 2016, rookie guard La'el Collins will be a year better and Jones will have some time to mull over some of his questionable one-year contracts from the offseason.

He can also start the search for the next great Dallas running back now. The clock is ticking.

Romo's three-interception performance in Thursday's blowout loss aside, he showed why quarterbacks almost always take home MVP awards. Without Romo Dallas was, and will continue to be, lost in orbit.

Jones had admitted that he was trying to get "too cute" at the position behind Romo, which ended up producing a Brandon Weeden, Matt Cassel carousel that obviously left the organization scrambling. So this offseason will be interesting if only because Jones is reactionary, and he will scour the market for THE best backup that money -- or draft picks -- can buy.

We're not suggesting that the clock is ticking on Romo, but it will be fascinating to see how exactly Jones solves his backup problem. Knowing the owner well, it won't be under-the-radar.
