Tennessee Titans release WR Hakeem Nicks

Hakeem Nicks' NFL career is quickly becoming a nomadic journey.

Nicks has been released by the Tennessee Titans, the team announced on Saturday. The release comes less than five months after Nicks signed a one-year deal with the Titans that included a $100,000 roster bonus.

Terry McCormick of TitansInsider.com first reported the move.

This one is a surprise. Nicks was given plenty of reps throughout OTAs and training camp and appeared to be in line for a significant role as a veteran target for rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota. He played in all four preseason games, finishing with three receptions for 59 yards.

Nicks, 27, had back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons with Eli Manning in 2010 and 2011 before a string of lower-body injuries took a toll. He struggled last season with the Colts, and later posited that the Titans' offense was a better fit for his skills than what Pep Hamilton was running in Indianapolis.

McCormick reported Nicks is a candidate to be re-signed after Week 1.
