UCLA's Brett Hundley worked out for Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys, who haven't drafted a quarterback since 2009, could be in the market for one in this draft and had a private workout with UCLA's Brett Hundley on Thursday.

» Draft Winds: Connecting draft prospects to NFL teams

NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport reported the news. Cowboys starter Tony Romo turns 35 next week, on April 21.

Dallas has drafted just three quarterbacks in the past 25 years -- Bill Musgrave in 1991, Quincy Carter in 2001 and Stephen McGee in 2009; Carter was a second-rounder, and the other two were fourth-rounders. Hundley looks to be a second- or third-rounder.

Dallas' current backup quarterback is Brandon Weeden, who washed out in Cleveland after being a first-round pick in 2012.

Hundley (6-foot-3, 226 pounds) racked up a school-record 11,677 total yards and threw a school-record 75 TD passes. He is a good athlete with a nice arm and is adept at running the read-option. But he lacks awareness and poise in the pocket and takes a ton of sacks for a guy with his mobility. That he hasn't shown he can be a pocket passer should scare the Cowboys and most NFL teams. Can he become one? Certainly. And if he does end up in Dallas, he likely would have at least a year or two to sit and learn about being an NFL quarterback.

Among Hundley's other recent visits: Arizona, Cincinnati, Houston, the New York Jets, Philadelphia and San Diego.

While Romo's increasing age likely causes some angst in the Cowboys' front office, quarterback is not necessarily a need position in this draft. Cornerback, running back and help on the defensive front are the top three needs, and taking Hundley -- or any quarterback -- on the first two days of the draft obviously would lessen the chances of Dallas getting an instant-impact rookie at the other positions.
