Pete Carroll said Monday that Richard Sherman's injured left elbow will require Tommy John surgery.
The Seattle Seahawks' corner suffered ulnar nerve damage after being hit in the second half of the NFC Championship by teammate Kam Chancellor.
Sherman played the Super Bowl with the injury. He ended the game with three tackles.
The surgery, most common among baseball pitchers, shouldn't be a long-term problem for Sherman -- who doesn't make a living throwing a ball. However, the rehab could be a grueling process.Â
Chancellor might also need surgery after injuring his knee in Super Bowl practice, Carroll said.Â
Carroll added that corner Jeremy Lane suffered a "significant" broken arm, which caused him to miss three-plus quarters of Sunday's game after the third-year player picked off Tom Brady. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport later reported that Lane has a compound fracture, both broken wrist bones. The first-quarter injury proved to be big as the Pats picked on Lane's replacement Tharold Simon. Lane will need offseason surgery.Â
Rapoport reported Monday that star safety Earl Thomas will seek a second opinion on the shoulder injury, which he suffered during the NFC Championship Game. The expectation, however, is that Thomas will need surgery.
The Seahawks' secondary will not only lick its emotional wounds after the Super Bowl loss, but their plethora of physical wounds as well this offseason.
