Panthers optimistic Cam Newton will play next week

After a horrifying car accident that Cam Newton was lucky to walk away from, it would be understandable to not see the quarterback again until 2015.

But according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, the Panthers are optimistic Newton will suit up next week against the Browns.

Newton came away from the accident with multiple transverse process fractures in his back, similar to an injury suffered by Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. But Newton also did so amid a traumatic incident where his truck flipped multiple times.

At the moment, Rapoport noted that Newton will ultimately be looked at as day to day.

It's hard to imagine doing something as involved as quarterbacking a football team so soon after the shock of a crash wears off, but Newton has been adamant about moving on from the moment the accident happened.

Believe it or not, the Panthers are still in the thick of a playoff race despite having just four wins and every game down the stretch is crucial. Newton wants to be a part of as many games as he can.
